Vishwanath Temple Khajuraho – A Walkthrough of History, Nandi Idol & Matangeshwar Temple

Khajuraho, in Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most remarkable temple towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Famous for its exquisite carvings and grand temple architecture, Khajuraho reflects the artistic brilliance of the Chandela dynasty.

In this blog, I’m sharing highlights from my visit to the Vishwanath Temple and the nearby Matangeshwar Temple. You’ll also find my detailed walkthrough video embedded below 👇 — where you can explore the temples visually and experience the grandeur first-hand.

Watch the Video Tour 🎥

I’ve documented my visit in this video, where we explore the Vishwanath Temple, take a closer look at the Nandi Mandapa and its monolithic idol, and briefly step inside the Matangeshwar Temple, the only active temple of Khajuraho.

Don’t forget to watch, like, and subscribe if you enjoy heritage explorations!

The Vishwanath Temple

The Vishwanath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in the 10th century by King Dhanga of the Chandela dynasty. Its towering shikhara (spire) dominates the skyline, while the temple walls feature stunning carvings of deities, celestial beings, and everyday life.

The Nandi Idol

Facing the sanctum is the Nandi Mandapa, which houses a massive sandstone Nandi idol, carved from a single block. This 6-foot-long bull is aligned perfectly with the Shiva lingam inside the temple, symbolizing the eternal devotion of Nandi to Lord Shiva.

The detailing — from the ornaments to the calm expression — reflects the sculptors’ artistic mastery and adds to the temple’s grandeur.

Matangeshwar Temple

A short walk away is the Matangeshwar Temple, unique for being the only living temple in Khajuraho where daily worship still takes place. Its huge lingam continues to attract devotees, linking Khajuraho’s glorious past with ongoing spiritual traditions.

Why You Should Visit Khajuraho

Visiting Khajuraho is more than just sightseeing — it’s an immersion into India’s spirituality, art, and history. The Vishwanath Temple, Nandi idol, and Matangeshwar Temple together offer a glimpse into the devotion of the Chandela kings and the timeless artistry of medieval India.

If you’re planning a trip to Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho should definitely be on your list.
