After the awesome visit to Ranthambhore Fort and the Tiger reserve we headed towards the nearby villages outside the Fort complex – Khiljipurand Sherpur. We explored some lesser known ruins and old structures like gateways, step wells, medieval places of worship etc here. Also, we met the locals there who welcomed us with warmth and befriended so many children there who followed us throughout the walk ๐ Despite the poverty and lack of basic amenities the local seemed to be really loving and caring…and the kids also happily gave us tangy dried raw-mangoes to relish ๐ After the village visit we also went to a nearby graveyard complex of sorts that seemed to be the royal graveyard since medieval times. There have been some restoration work done there but most of the structures are yet to be identified in terms if exact dates and people associated with them. In this episode we visit the Mosque and Tomb of JAMALI-KAMALI.
Shaikh Fazlullah (pen name – Jamali) was a Sufi mystic, a poet and a traveller from the early 16th century. One of his known works include a book, a kind of biography of variousย Sufi saints of Medieval India. Jamaliย was also the court poet and teacher of Sikander Lodhi and also early Mughal rulers of medieval times.
Kamali is popularlyย believedย to be a close companion of the Sufi saint.
This mosque is a very good example of Indo-Islamic architecture and the tomb still houses within the originalย colorful tile and plaster work from medieval times!
We also discuss about the recent controversies associated with this place and see glimpses of the royal burial adjoining this Sufi shrine.
Jamali-Kamali is also known to be one of the haunted places in Delhi, however, we didn’t sense anything ghostly during our visit that day ..luckily ๐
